Agatha Christie is one of the most adapted authors in film and television. But despite how frequently her works are translated to the screen, director and screenwriter Hugh Laurie â who crafted the latest adaptation, âWhy Didnât They Ask Evans?â for BritBox â said itâs not as simple as transposing Christieâs plots to film. âYou have to assume a rather arrogant position of assuming you know what it was the author was going for,â Laurie said in IndieWireâs latest Consider This interview.
The three-episode series tells the story of Bobby Jones (Will Poulter) who, while working as a golf caddy, discovers a dying man at the bottom of a cliff. The manâs final words are the title of the series and send Bobby on the trail of a murder mystery. Along the way he draws in former childhood friend and socialite Frankie Derwent (Lucy Boynton).
The character of Frankie, specifically, was a primary reason Laurie and Boynton wanted to work on the series. âI remembered it so fondly from my childhood when I read it,â said Laurie. âIn this story, what I remembered most clearly, was my absolute infatuation with the character of Frankie Derwent.â
Boynton saw the character similarly, as a magnetic, three-dimensional woman. â[She] has such confidence in her drive, and her momentum, and in herself,â Boynton said. The actress said that she saw the words âmoxieâ and âgumptionâ when she envisioned the role.

âSheâs such an interesting character because sheâs set in a time when the English class system was so much more rigid. There were so many more limitations on women,â said Boynton.
And while the actress didnât draw on any past characters for reference, there is a classic film feeling to the show. Laurie points out that just a year prior to the publication of âWhy Didnât They Ask Evans,â Dashiell Hammett released âThe Thin Man,â and both novels possess a similar tone. âIâd be amazed if she [Christie] hadnât read it,â said Laurie. The biggest difference between Hammettâs Nick and Nora Charles and Christieâs Frankie and Bobby? The latter donât drink as much.
