As Movie Theaters Make a Comeback, Everyone’s Watching Netflix’s Next Move

While CinemaCon showed studios projecting confidence in theatrical tentpoles, it remains unclear what the streaming giant will do next.

Anyone in the industry following the news out of CinemaCon got one resounding message out of the Las Vegas gathering this week: Movie theaters are back! As studios delivered their most promising offerings to exhibitors, everyone from Warner Bros. to Disney made it clear that they were investing in big theatrical tentpoles. Paramount, meanwhile, unveiled “Top Gun: Maverick” to great acclaim. This summer movie season holds a lot of promise.

All of this news, of course, comes just a week after Netflix’s subscriber woes left everyone guessing about its next moves. Does the streaming platform refine its theatrical approach to look more like its competitors? How will it double down on quality?

Those are some of the many questions that come up in this week’s Screen Talk, as Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson swap perspectives on a developing situation.

The pair also discuss their experiences attending the Cate Blanchett tribute at Lincoln Center this week, the Cannes jury selection, and recommend some new releases.
