âHouse of the Dragonâ â HBOâs upcoming prequel to its wildly popular âGame of Thronesâ fantasy series â is coming. (Sorry, we had to do it.)
The series premieres August 21 on HBO Max.
Anticipation for âHouse of the Dragonâ has been high since the show was unveiled by WarnerMedia in October 2019. Most details about the project have been under wraps since its initial reveal, but bits and pieces about the show have been teased in recent months. âHouse of the Dragonâ is among HBOâs most high-profile upcoming series and has massive shoes to fill, given the success of the premium cablerâs âGame of Thrones,â which earned 59 Emmys throughout its eight-season run. Both series are based on hit fantasy novels from George R.R. Martin.
âGame of Thronesâ concluded in 2019, and speculation about its successor series has been rife since the showâs conclusion. âHouse of the Dragonâ is just one of the multitude of âGame of Thronesâ spinoffs that HBO has in the works. The premium cable outlet is also developing prequels âTales of Dunk and Eggâ and â10,000 Ships,â along with a âHouse of the Dragonâ spinoff titled â9 Voyages,â which would follow Steve Toussaintâs character from the upcoming series. There are also three animated âGame of Thronesâ projects in development, including one based on The Golden Empire of Yi Ti that is inspired by ancient China.
HBO previously shot a pilot for an untitled âGame of Thronesâ spinoff starring Naomi Watts that was ultimately not picked up to series.
