Global superstar Jennifer Lopez is just getting started. The multi-hyphenate Grammy nominee is at the center of the Netflix documentary âHalftime,â which debuts Opening Night at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 8. The streamer will premiere the film, directed by Oscar-nominated Tribeca alum Amanda Micheli (âVegas Babyâ), on June 14. Watch the trailer below.
While the documentary charts J.Loâs rise to fame, the trailer for the feature film is framed by Lopezâs determination to be âtaken seriouslyâ by the media, her peers, and the respective music and film industries.
From showcasing a tearful Lopezâs reaction to her âHustlersâ Oscars snub to reliving rumors of Lopez being considered a âdivaâ and disgraced entertainment broadcast reporter Billy Bush inquiring about her rear end (literally), âHalftimeâ charts the many hurdles Lopez has endured throughout her legacy.
âI said to her once, âDoesnât this bother you?'â Lopezâs longtime love and current fiancĂ©, Oscar winner Ben Affleck, explains in the trailer. âAnd she said, âI expected this.'â
Lopez recalls being iced out of the Academy Awards for her scene-stealing turn in âHustlersâ through tears, saying, âIt was hard. I just had very low self-esteem.â
The âJenny From the Blockâ singer later added, âI had to really figure out who I was and believe in that and not believe anything else.â
And Lopezâs Super Bowl Halftime performance opposite Shakira was a pinnacle moment to make a statement, with Lopez explaining she wanted to do âsomething with substanceâ and not just be âshaking our fucking assesâ onstage.
âI donât do this for an award,â Lopez sums up. âI do this to connect with people and make them feel things because I want to feel something.â
Lopez most recently starred opposite Owen Wilson in the hit Peacock film âMarry Me,â which drew some inspiration from her own life in the public eye as a pop star. She also has two additional films coming up. Thereâs the romantic comedy âShotgun Weddingâ opposite Josh Duhamel (who replaced Armie Hammer last year) from Amazon Studios and directed by Jason Moore. Lopez also stars in the Netflix Original thriller âThe Motherâ from âMulanâ director Niki Caro. Both are expected to come out later this year.
